What the average individual can browse on the Internet is the Open Web; Facebook, Quora, are open sites. Only 5% of the Internet is open web‌. However, if you change your settings and prevent your profile from the search engine, your profile will fall under the Deep Web. For example, your bank account information, your emails are on the Deep Web. They are available on the Internet but are not open to the public. But they are not illegal. Many of us think, Deep Web and Dark Web are the same things, but they are different.

So what is the Dark Web?

You should have heard of Tor. This will allow you to hide your identity and navigate the Internet. The US Navy built this tor. They made it so they could exchange information through the general Internet. Now you can host a secret website using Tor Hidden Services. 

Unlike .com, .org, .in, .us, are at the end of general websites; they have .onion. The other name of Tor is onion Router because here one’s identity remains hidden behind one layer after another, like an onion scrub. So we can only open these secret websites using Tor, and if you do not know the name of the website, then you can not open this website. Because of this, anti-social people open secret websites and commit immoral things - selling drugs, selling guns, selling any kind of illegal goods. 

Besides buying and selling, militants and extremists create websites like Facebook and exchange information to attack or destroy. In countries like China, Iran, they control the Internet. Here, many use Tor to open their mouths against the government.
