Choose the right honey and take advantage of these 12 benefits

Honey is one of the oldest sweeteners in the world. In this article you can read which type of honey has a beneficial effect on your intestines, skin and circulation. You can also read which type of honey is best to avoid. After reading this article you will know if honey is a suitable sugar substitute during weight loss.

How is honey made?
Honey is produced by bees using nectar. The (work) bee removes the nectar from flowers and plants and stores it in the honey stomach. Part of the honey is for own consumption. The rest is vomited and supplied with enzymes by young worker bees.

The enzymes excrete the naturally occurring sucrose in fruit sugar and grape sugar. This makes the honey easy to digest. After a few days, the nectar turns into nectar and turns into honey. In the hive the honey is put into the cells of the honeycomb by the bees. The bees then seal the comb with a layer of wax that provides a natural way of preserving.

The beekeeper carefully removes the bees from the comb. The beekeeper removes the wax layer with a special fork. The full honeycombs go into a centrifuge, whereby the honey is thrown out of the comb.

The honey then remains in a sealed container for three to five days, so that wax residues, dust particles and other substances float to the surface. The honey is sieved and the pots are filled.

Different types of honey
To take advantage of all the healthy properties of honey, we use the raw (organic) form. This means that honey has not been processed and that the beekeeper has not used any pesticides or preservatives.

honeycombThis method is checked in the Netherlands. The honey is often hard (crystallized) due to the pollen grains present and is therefore not liquid. Acacia honey is an exception as a liquid variant.

It is mandatory in the Netherlands to state on the label where the honey comes from. Honey from the Far East is often processed and uncontrolled, and often contains preservatives. The healthy substances from honey have been removed, so that it only serves as a sweetener. This type of honey is more difficult to digest and is therefore not suitable during a diet.

The benefits of honey
In addition to the fact that honey contains good substances such as trace elements, enzymes, minerals, vitamins and amino acids, it also offers the following health benefits:

Reduces dandruff and an itchy scalp
Works as a cough medicine and relieves throat infections (which also means you sleep better)
Works as an energy boost for athletes (before and after exercise, especially in endurance sports)
Calms the nerves
Helps with inflammation in the stomach and intestines
Reduces diarrhea
Prevents the growth of bacteria and fungi
Has a stimulating effect on the nervous system and blood circulation
Works as a heart enhancer, because the flow of the heart muscles improves
Improves resistance, making it a reinforcing agent for pregnant and lactating women, children, the elderly and the sick
Relieves hay fever and seasonal allergies (use local, raw honey)
Can be used as a cosmetic product in the form of a face mask, hair rinse and as a skin moisturizer
Nutritional value of honey
The nutritional value of 339 grams of honey is:

1031 calories
278 grams of carbohydrates, of which:
- 278 grams of sugar
1 gram of protein
0 grams of fat
0.7 grams of fiber
Honey contains the following vitamins and minerals:

Vitamin B2: 0.1 mg
Vitamin B6: 0.1 mg
Vitamin C: 1.7 mg
Potassium: 176 mg
Magnesium: 6.8 mg
Manganese: 0.3 mg
Sodium: 13.6 mg
Phosphorus: 13.6 mg
Zinc: 0.7 mg
Copper: 0.1 mg
Calcium: 20.3 mg
Iron: 1.4 mg
In addition, honey contains 58 grams of water and has an unlimited shelf life (if it is properly stored or if it is indicated otherwise on the label).

Note: do not give honey to children under 1 year. The intestinal system is not yet suitable for processing the bacteria in honey, which leads to intestinal problems.

Eating honey while losing weight?
Honey is used as a sugar substitute. However, sugar and honey cannot be compared. Honey is a special product with a high nutritional value. Because of the unique production by bees and the healthy nutrients it contains, honey is much more than just a sweetener.

Although honey is rich in sugars, it also contains a wide variety of vitamins and minerals that the body needs to function optimally. These nutrients cannot be found in 'normal' sugar.

Use honey unheated so that the valuable and heat-sensitive enzymes are not lost. Due to the presence of minerals and vitamins, honey remains much healthier than regular sugar.

As you can read in my article about the low carbohydrate diet , carbohydrates are the main cause of a big belly. By eating low carbohydrate and choosing carbohydrates of the right type (such as honey), you can lose weight quickly and healthily without exercising.
