New Coronavirus: First case confirmed in Us

While the first case of coronavirus has emerged in the US, Russia is stepping up its controls on its border with China.

A first case of the novel coronavirus, which first appeared in China, has been detected in the United States. The virus was detected near Seattle in the northwestern US state of Washington in a man who had entered from China, the US health agency CDC announced on Tuesday. The man was taken to Everett Hospital as a precaution. He had been in the Chinese city of Wuhan. A fish and poultry market in Wuhan is considered to be the starting point for the virus reminiscent of the SARS pathogen. According to US authorities, however, the man did not visit the market.

Most of the 300 or so registered infected by Tuesday live in the Chinese metropolis of Wuhan . Several people have already died from respiratory diseases caused by the virus. Other individual cases were reported from Thailand, Japan, South Korea and Taiwan.

Russia strengthens border controls
Russia is stepping up controls on its border with China for fear of the spread of the novel coronavirus. Additional hygiene regulations have come into force at border crossings, the Russian health authority announced on Tuesday. Anyone who has symptoms on arrival should be quarantined.

Increased security measures are also in place at Moscow's main airport in Sheremetyevo. Passengers arriving from China are still to be examined on board the aircraft for signs of infection. Thermal imaging cameras are used to measure their body temperature, the airport said. If this is increased, a medical team will be sent on board immediately and the affected traveller will be isolated. So far, however, there has been no suspicion. About 1.5 million tourists from China travel to Russia every year, according to Moscow.

The Russian health authority also advised special caution when travelling to China. Tourists should avoid the central Chinese city of Wuhan and stay away from markets and zoos.
