What strategy is Iran pursuing?

Iran attacked two US military bases in Iraq on Wednesday night. Following the killing of top Iranian general Soleimani by a targeted US air attack, there has now been a retaliatory strike.

It didn't take Iran a week to turn threats into actions and respond to the death of its top general. President Trump is under pressure. The situation could get out of control.

After Iran’s top leader Ajatollah Ali Khamenei, Iranian President Hassan Ruhani has also spoken. "If the Americans plan further attacks and crimes against Iran , we will give an answer that is even tougher than today's attack, " added Ruhani. Ruhani calls the killing of Soleimani a "war crime by the Americans" . That "only led to the Iranian people becoming more united than ever ".

The Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu announced after a trip to Iraq. The trip was linked to the "increased diplomatic efforts" to alleviate tensions in the region, the Foreign Ministry said in a statement. Cavusoglu has also phoned his Iranian counterpart, Mohammed Javad Sarif . There is still little information on the content of the conversation. The state news agency Anadolu reports that the developments in the region were at stake.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu warns of an attack on Israel in the midst of the Iran-US crisis . "Anyone who tries to attack us will have to deal with the most devastating blow," said Netanyahu during a speech in Jerusalem. The head of government once again praised the actions of the United States and said Israel was on the side of the United States . The Iranian military has threatened attacks on Israel during the night if the United States retaliates after the Iranian missile attacks on US targets in Iraq.
