Let's Talk Physics

Physics is the science that tries to understand, model and explain the natural phenomena of the Universe. According to Galileo, the laws of nature are written in mathematical language. He discovered several laws, such as inertia and the relativity of speeds that contradict common sense.

Classical physics (solid, liquid and gaseous media), which are still relevant, applies, for example, to the construction of buildings, power plants and aircraft. It uses the old notions of time, space, matter and energy as defined by Newton.

Quantum physics is based on new definitions of energy and matter, but retains the old notions of time and space of classical physics.

Modern physics underwent a revolution of thought at the beginning of the twentieth century with the discovery of special relativity, which changed the concept of time, and the introduction of quantum mechanics which upset the notion of reality.

Computer simulation has occupied a very important place in physics research since the beginning of computer science.

Physics has an aesthetic dimension.  Indeed, theorists almost systematically seek to simplify, unify and symmetrize theories. Modern physics is written in mathematical terms, it has since its birth had intense couple relations with the mathematical sciences.  Until the twentieth century, mathematicians were mostly physicists and often naturalist philosophers. As a result, physics has very often been the source of profound developments in mathematics. For example, infinitesimal calculus was invented independently by Leibniz and Newton to understand dynamics and universal gravitation.

The physical sciences are related to other sciences, especially chemistry, science of molecules and chemical compounds. They share many fields, such as quantum mechanics, thermochemistry and electromagnetism. The study of the physical bases of chemical systems, interdisciplinary field is called physical chemistry. However, chemical phenomena are large and varied enough that chemistry remains considered a discipline in its own right. Many other interdisciplinary fields exist in physics. Astrophysics is on the border with astronomy, biophysics is at the interface with biology.
