What is a Microcontroller?

Almost all modern devices contain a microcontroller, think of washing machines, telephones, cars, robotic lawn mowers, remote controls, et cetera. Microcontrollers are used in automating and controlling devices. A microcontroller (abbreviated μc or MCU) is an integrated circuit with a microprocessor used to control electronic equipment. To speak of a microcontroller, the system must at least consist of a CPU, memory and I /O. Microcontrollers are available in 8-bit, 16-bit, 32-bit and a not-so-often used 64-bit version.
